Further Reading

I look foward to reading the following section of the novel to find out what
-What Joseph was arrested for
-Who the people in the court with the universal badges are
-What is the relationship between Joseph and Frauline Burstner
-and just to find out how every one is involved

First Interrogation

In this chapter I definetly agree with Shelby when she says she feels for Joseph for the same reasons. He is heading to a court house in which he has no specific time or specific location. Throughout the novel so far K. has seemed to be played. The Interrogation was a joke. The entire time K. is bashing and ranting on his thoughts and feelings which had no kind of order. I thought Graham was right when he said that the trial is a mockery. Everyone in the room seemed to be on the same side and Joseph even noticed that they were all wearing badges of various sizes and colors on their coat-collars. Joseph also noticed that the Examining magistrate was making signs to the crowd when he was talking showing that maybe they were just watching his reactions and trying to find things they can use against him.

The Arrest Reaction

"The Arrest" bothered me only because Joseph K. is kept in the dark through out the entire scene. To me it just seemed realistic because of the laws today that I am pretty sure would have prevented that. Though it seems after reading further that the whole scene is played out perfectly for the side of the court. It seems like everyone is a part of something bigger and we as the readers are left out because we read in the point of view of Joseph. I feel like the supervisor of the investigation and every one else involved are all trying to get information in these thought out scences so when a trial, which i am prediciting is going to happen, occurs all the information is twisted to hurt K.

The Arrest - First Interrogation

After reading the first couple of chapters I have only noticed a couple of characters that seem to play a role in the novel.
1. Joseph K. - I agree with Shelby that he obviously seems to be the protagonist as shown in his role of the main character. We know he is the Chief clerk at a bank and that he is successful. We also know that he did have an intimate night with Fraulein Burstner.

2. Frauline Burstner- This women seems to live in the same house as K. and we know that she is learning law and that she kissed K. in an awkward way.

3.Assitant manager- Plays the small role when he seems to "suck up" to K. because he has a higher position at the bank.

4. The Court System- These people have been described in my interpretation as a cult. They seem like they are involved in a much bigger picture with K. and every action that is played out now in the beggining of the novel is going to have importance later.

Initial Inquiry

It seems to me that the protagonist in this novel is Joseph K. and the antagonist is the court. After reading the initial inquiry, i feel for Joseph. His intentions were to show up at the court on time. How is he supposed to know what time? who to meet? where to go? if no one told him. Imagine you are told one day that you have to go to a new school and all they tell you is what the school is called, they give you no other information? do you expect yourself to show up exactly on time and no where to go if none of that information was given to you? it is impossible.
I do find it annoying how the audience in this trial are the officers. I have to agree with what graham said, it is a complete mockery.

My Thoughts on the (first) Courtroom Scene

To me, this entire scene is a further example of how the whole trial might be a mockery. First, K. arrives at least fifteen minutes late to his nine o'clock trial. In general, it'd be against the law to show up late to a court hearing or, really, any kind of government process. Then there is the fact that the jury applauds and encourages K. whenever he seems to say something controversial yet provoking and persuading, which would not usually happen in a real setting. I think they might be trying to egg him on. Another reason is because the judge in the courtroom doesn't even attempt to use his given power to keep Josef's outcries to a minimum; he allows K. to go on several rants that bash the entire court system overall. Where is the order?

I also decided that this book probably takes place in Germany, because Ms. Burstner is referred to as "Fraulein" (meaning "Miss" in German) several times throughout the previous chapter.
I don't know what you guys think about this, but this is exactly how I picture the scene in the Initial Inquiry (chapter 3 in my book)

Chapter Two

So i just finished reading chapter two and I have to say it makes more sense to me... well somewhat. I have come to realize the Frau is a women, not a man, which clears a lot of information for me. Also i have realized that the women who is living in the apartment with him is his lover? i mean i dont think they are dating but i know they have some relationship going on.

I am really curious to know what he did. Frau is convinced that it is nothing major, she thinks it is something scholarly. well what is that supposed to mean? why would he get arrested for a scholarly action?

Chapter 1

Hey guys! I finally got my account to work...
I finished reading chapter one and a little bit more but so far the book doesn't seem to grab my attention very much. It's just weird because when you consider the fact that he was arrested, I would expect something like that to have really interested me with some kind of suspense but the story is not told like that. The tone of the story so far is very calm as though K. is going through any average day in his life. The first part of the story that caught my attention was at the very end of the first chapter when he kissed Ms. Burstner good night like an "animal." Judging by the description, it seemed a bit awkward as if Ms. Bursnter was very uncomfortable and did not want him to do that. However, K. left her room, feeling successful. He may just be very arrogant and unable to pick up on the signs.

My Thoughts

I also just began reading the book, and I have to agree with both Jack and Graham. I am enjoying it so far, but I am confused about a couple of things. Who is he living with? why is he being arrested? and why is he allowed to continue living his normal life? It really bothers me that he is not allowed to know what he did wrong. I could never imagine waking up one morning and the first thing to find out is that I am being arrested for something i have no idea about.

My thoughts on the Arrest

I just bought the book and started reading it as well. As far as the beginning, I agree with Jack on many of his thoughts.

Some parts that are confusing to me at this point are his relationship with the girl in the room next to him, his stance in his building, how much money he makes, and the obvious question of his arrest.

The Arrest

So far I have read "the arrest" in the beginning of the novel. I thought it was interesting, especially how the main character K. has an arrogant tone as he constantly speaks and thinks in a degrading vibe towards the arresting officers. I have the feeling that he is an old man from how he has a person serving him breakfast and the way he explains the other people living around him, but he states that he is 30. From the first chapter I can understand that he has a high position at a bank so I assume that he has money. The whole police situation in which he is arrested but allowed to go to work and continue on confuses me and I am excited to continue reading.

interesting fact about the book

Someone told me that the author of this book wrote an extra chapter and had no where to put it in the novel so he decided to place that one chapter differently in every copy of the book. I thought it was really interesting so I wanted to share.
